At long last, the highly awaited Volvo EX90 has finally been launched here in Malaysia today, more than two years after it was first teased by Volvo Car Malaysia. The fully electric (EV) seven-seater SUV will be offered here in Malaysia in one single variant at launch, dubbed “Ultra Twin” priced at RM442,888 on-the-road, and without insurance.
It’ll be sold alongside a heavily-revised XC90 – also launched today – for those who prefer more traditional means of propulsion. You can read more about the new 2025 Volvo XC90 in our separate launch coverage, linked here.
The Volvo EX90 bears considerable resemblance to its petrol-powered counterpart, with the two siblings sharing the same upright, body silhouette. That said, the new electric SUV has actually grown in almost all dimensions bar its height, measuring 87 mm longer, 41 mm wider, but 29 mm lower than its hybrid counterpart.
As the new flagship in the Swedish carmaker’s line-up, the Volvo EX90 also showcases the marque’s latest design language, highlighted by the new pixelated Thor’s hammer front daytime-running light signature, and a split tail light design with separate lighting elements flanking the rear windscreen for better visibility from the back.
Uniquely, the headlights are actually hidden behind the light signature in front, which physically opens up to reveal the main headlight beam – a pretty neat party trick!
Standard exterior features on the Volvo EX90 in Malaysia include:
- High definition “pixel” LED matrix headlights
- LED tail lights
- Concealed door handles
- Soft-close doors
- 21-inch aerodynamic wheels
- Hands-free powered tailgate
- NFC and mobile key support
Inside, Volvo’s signature minimalism is on full display here, with a very clean yet upmarket dashboard design characterised by the genuine Birch wood veneer, said to be certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) to be responsibly sourced, as well as the large 14.5-inch portrait touchscreen infotainment system in the centre, running the latest version of the Google Android Automotive OS.
Unlike its younger brother, the EX30, the Volvo EX90 here also gets a separate nine-inch letterbox-style digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel for driving information.

The Volvo EX90 is only available in a seven-seater configuration in Malaysia, which Volvo calls a “true seven-seater”, promising sufficient space for seven adults across three rows. They are arranged in a “cinema-style” layout, with each row progressively taller to give all passengers a good view out front.
As always, the centre seat of the second row comes with an integrated booster seat for the safety of younger passengers, while the third-row seats can be electronically folded, both down and up, via buttons located in the cargo area.
On that note, the rear cargo area boasts 310 litres of storage space with the seats in their upright position, with extra hidden storage space located under the boot floor; 665 litres with the third-row seats folded down, and 1,900 litres with the second row seats folded down too.
An additional ‘frunk’ is also available underneath the bonnet to store smaller items such as your charging cables.

As is the case for all modern Volvo cars, though, top speed is limited to 180 km/h.
