The Suzuki Jimny 5-door has just been launched in Malaysia, with only a single variant, to the tune of RM199,950. It is RM25,000 or so more than the 3-door Jimny, priced at RM158,900 according to the Suzuki Malaysia site.
Unlike the 3-door Jimny that’s imported from Japan, the 5-door version hails from India via Maruti Suzuki but that’s not the only difference. As it is the Jimny for families (not couples or singles) here’s what the 5-door offers for the extra money:
More space

The 5-door Jimny is 342 mm longer at 3,822 mm, with a 340 mm longer wheelbase at 2,590 mm, compared to the 3-door. As such boot space has more than doubled; from 85 litres to 211 litres of space. With the rear seats folded, boot space can be expanded to 332 litres.
Larger touchscreen

The new 5-door Jimny gets a larger nine-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 3-door only comes with a seven-inch unit.

More protective

As it is catered to Jimny enthusiasts with families, the 5-door comes with the same safety features as the 3-door such as Hill Descent Control, Hill Hold Control and Electronic Stability Programme (ESP). That said, instead of just two airbags, you get six airbags in the 5-door including side and curtain airbags.
Rear seating position

The longer 5-door Jimny offers more legroom in the rear seat but that’s not all. According to the diagram above, the seating position is also different compared to the 3-door. As you can see, in the back seat of the 5-door, passengers can sit in a more reclined position with better thigh support.
Even more prepared for off-roading

If you’re expecting more power or fancy off-road features, sorry there’s none. The differences are on the approach angle; now 36 degrees vs 37 degrees (3-door), departure angle 47 vs 49 degrees (3-door) and 24 degrees vs 28 degrees (3-door).
What do you think about the 5-door Jimny? Is it something you’d get over the conventional SUVs, such as the Mazda CX-8 or Honda CR-V? Can it be as popular and well-received (despite the price) as the more iconic 3-door? Let us know in the comments.
