Volvo U-turns on decision of selling SUVs only – V60 & V90 station wagons to return to the UK

Volvo will apparently be reintroducing the Volvo V60 and V90 station wagons back to the UK market soon, according to a report by Autocar. This decision has been made due to a renascence of demand for station wagons in the country.

This might appear as a surprise as Volvo UK pulled its station wagon and sedan models off its shelf in August last year. This was done as the Swedish carmaker decided to divert its focus to its more popular SUV models instead.

Volvo’s sedans such as the S60 and S90 were also discontinued in the UK last year. Production of the former has also come to a halt in the brand’s plant in South Carolina, US, with the excuse of making way for the EX90 all-electric SUV. The Volvo S90 continues to be built in Daqing China, even though its all-electric successor, dubbed the ES90 is set to make its debut sometime next year.

Volvo told Autocar in an interview, “We removed the V60 and V90 from sale in the UK last August amid falling appetite for estate cars. While this remains a long-term trend, we have seen a resurgence for our estate products in recent months and have decided to reintroduce the V60 and V90 to our UK portfolio in response to this. We will begin taking orders next month.”

“When operating in a fast-moving industry, we continually re-evaluate our product portfolio to ensure we have the right mix to serve all our customers. As part of this process, it is not uncommon for us to remove certain models or derivatives from sale and reintroduce them later,” the carmaker added.

“We were thrilled by the many comments from customers and media last year, with many stories and memories of how our estate cars have been a huge part of their lives. We look forward to helping create more.”

Despite making a comeback, it is unsure how long will the Volvo V60 and V90 stay on Volvo’s shelf though. Just in case you have forgotten, the current generation V90 was introduced back in 2016, while the current generation V60 has been around since 2018. This makes them 8- and 6-year-olds respectively.

According to sales figures published recently, the Volvo V60 and V90 are both the brand’s weakest-selling global models in 2023, having contributed to only 44,600 combined sales. The more popular Volvo XC60 SUV alone clocked 228,600 units of sales in that same year.

Closer to home, the Volvo V60 Recharge T8 Ultimate is the last station wagon to remain standing on Volvo Car Malaysia (VCM)’s shelf. However, we wouldn’t expect this model to remain on sale here for too long, as demand for station wagons in Malaysia is scarce. So if you have ever had the thought of buying one for yourself, please do so before it’s too late.
