Volvo Cars set a new global sales record in 2018, selling more than 600,000 cars for the first time since the company was set up in 1927. In 2018, Volvo recorded a total of 642,253 unit sales worldwide, a 12.4 per cent increased compared to the same period in 2017.

This new sales record marks Volvo’s fifth consecutive year of record global sales, underscoring the brand’s renewed product portfolio led by its award-winning SUV models – XC90, XC60 and XC40. The XC60 was the company’s bestselling model in 2018 with 189,459 cars sold, followed by the XC90 with 94,182 cars sold.

A total of 77,587 Volvo V40/V40 Cross Country were sold in 2018, placing it the third-best selling model of the company’s portfolio. During the same year, a total of 75,828 XC40s and 57,142 S90 saloons were sold.

Europe remains the biggest market for the Swedish brand, with sales rose by 6.4 per cent to 317,838 cars in 2018 compared to the previous year. The strong performance in Europe was led by the new V60 and XC40 models. This followed closely by China which sold 130,593 cars in 2018 (+14.1 per cent) with the locally assembled XC60 and S90 being the main sales drivers.

Sales in the US also grew by 20.6 per cent to 98,263 cars compared to the same period in 2017, led by growing demand for the XC60. While the first US-made S60 saloon has already rolled out of factory floors, the S60 will only start to contribute to sales volumes in 2019.
