Peugeot, Citroen, and other Stellantis brands could soon feature Leapmotor’s range-extender tech

Future hybrid models from Stellantis could likely utilise Leapmotor’s range-extended electric vehicle (REEV) technology, potentially bringing Leapmotor’s proprietary powertrains to brands like Peugeot and Citroen.

This collaboration was hinted at by Leapmotor International CEO Tianshu Xin. Speaking to Autocar, Xin suggested that Leapmotor’s REEV technology could eventually find its way into the wider Stellantis portfolio, although he stopped short of naming specific upcoming models for the European market.

He confirmed that Leapmotor and Stellantis are currently evaluating technology transfer opportunities, a move that fits the broader strategy of their partnership. As a controlling stakeholder with 51% ownership of Leapmotor’s international arm, Stellantis is actively seeking these synergies to keep its legacy European brands competitive in the electric era.

The Leapmotor bossman also hinted that platform sharing is on the cards. This suggests that future Leapmotor models could be built using existing Stellantis architectures to better cater for the European market.

Leapmotor C16

In early 2025, a fleet of REEV Leapmotor models, including the Leapmotor C10, C11, and C16, appeared in Malaysia as part of the ASEAN Expedition Drive. Unlike the fully electric C10 already on sale in Malaysia, the REEV variant features a 1.5-litre engine producing 95 hp, paired with a 215 hp (160 kW) electric motor. This setup uses a 28.4 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, enabling a combined range of 950 km (WLTP).

The C11 uses a 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine coupled with a 272 hp (200 kW) electric motor. Its 43.74 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery offers a combined range of 1,024 km (CLTC). Meanwhile, the C16 utilises a 1.5-litre inline-four (92 hp) and a 231 hp (170 kW) motor. A 28 kWh LFP battery gives the C16 a combined range of 1,095 km (CLTC).
