Video: 2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 ‘Electric G-Wagen’ in Malaysia, RM958,888

The new era for the iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class has arrived in Malaysia with the launch of the Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology, and it can be yours from RM958,888.

Despite looking almost exactly like its siblings that have an engine, the Mercedes-Benz G580 differs from its brethren by featuring a unique front grille design and a new square-shaped external storage box on the tailgate, in place of the externally mounted spare tyre.

Perhaps the biggest change is what you can’t see: four electric motors that push out 587 hp and 1,164 Nm of torque, allowing a sprint to 100 km/h from a standstill in 4.7 seconds.

If you’re wondering if the whisper-quiet G580 is faster than the Mercedes-AMG G63, sorry to burst your bubble. Despite the G580 having a massive 1,164 Nm of torque, the V8-powered G63 is still 0.4 seconds faster to 100 km/h.

Still, the Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology can triumph over the G63 by offering an emissions-free range of 473 km (WLTP), thanks to its 116 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Charging is supported with AC charging at 11 kW and DC charging at 200 kW, the latter enabling a 10-80% recharge in 32 minutes.

All said, the Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology is RM990k cheaper than the Mercedes-AMG G63 while delivering comparable performance. Will the fully electric G580 resonate with fans of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class?
