RM2.2 billion Chery Smart Auto Industrial Park to complete by 2026 – 100k cars per year, max output of 300k

Chery Corporate Malaysia and Legenda Beringin Holding have signed an agreement for the development of the Chery Smart Auto Industrial Park, in an investment worth RM2.2 billion in total over a period of five years. The industrial park is set to be completed by 2026 with an initial annual production capacity of 100,000 vehicles, scalable to 300,000 vehicles per annum.

“Chery is proud to be an integral part of this visionary development, where we will establish state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities, integrate cutting-edge smart technologies, and produce and extensive range of vehicles – from internal combustion engine (ICE) models to the latest in plug-in hybrid (PHEV), battery electric (BEV), and energy-efficient vehicle (EEV) technologies.” said Chery International President Zhang Guibing.

The Chery Smart Auto Industrial Park will be part of the 800-acre Beringin High-Tech Auto Valley development project, of which 200 acres of land have been set aside for Chery during the first phase of the development. Apart from production facilities, which will further expand the carmaker’s regional export aspirations, Chery will also be establishing a “cutting-edge R&D centre” at the location, further creating high-value job opportunities for Malaysians.

The remaining land that is at the Beringin High-Tech Auto Valley will be set aside for other developments, in line with the industrial park’s goal to become a hub for “automotive innovation, supply chain, vocational training, and technological advancement in the region.”

“This project is more than a land investment. It supports Malaysia’s aspiration of being a high-tech and sustainable industrial economy by 2030, which is in in-line with the New Industrial Master Plan,” said Legenda Beringin Chairman Chia Song Kooi.

Currently, Chery has two manufacturing facilities in Malaysia producing locally assembled (CKD) vehicles for the Chery and Jaecoo brands. The first is at the Inokom plant to produce CKD Chery Tiggo 8 Pro and Chery Omoda 5.

The second and most recent assembly plant is in Shah Alam, where the Jaecoo J7 and Jaecoo J7 PHEV are produced for local consumption and export to other countries in Southeast Asia (SEA), with Vietnam being the first SEA country to receive its first shipment of both ICE and PHEV models.
