Sony, the Japanese conglomerate known for making the PlayStation 5, made a shock announcement to the world in CES 2020: They are going to make an electrical vehicle (EV) and presented the Vision S as a proof of concept. Now, five years and a partnership with Honda later, Sony actually pulled it off with the launch of the AFEELA 1 at CES 2025, touting the new EV under Sony Honda Mobility (SHM) as an entertainment hub on wheels packed with a slew of EV tech and features.
The tech that the AFEELA 1 boasts clearly shows that it is an entertainment-focused space. SHM utilises its proprietary noise-cancelling technology to silence all sounds coming from the outside of the car. Sony’s 360 Spatial Surround Sound Technologies is also strategically placed around the cabin for a premium and immersive sound.
Screens dominate the cabin interior from one side to the other. The front seats have what Sony calls the Panoramic Screen that stretches from pillar to pillar, while the rear seats have their own screen displays for the passengers riding in the back seat.
Remote play for the PlayStation 5 is also supported. So yes, if you want to, you can play Gran Turismo in the car while you’re waiting to charge the car.
The AFEELA 1 is also equipped with a motion management system integrated with motor control, brakes, and suspension as standard to optimise ride comfort and handling on different road surfaces.
The car will be available in two trim levels: The Origin starting from USD89,900 (approx. RM404k) and the Signature priced at USD102,900 (approx. RM463k).
Both variants of the AFEELA 1 will be powered by a 91 kWh battery pack with a 483 km range. The all-wheel-drive powertrain boasts a pair of 241 hp electric motors on each axle that brings the total horsepower output at 482 hp.
Other similarities between both variants include AC charging at 11 kW peak capacity and DC fast charging up to 150 kW. The Signature variant is compatible with the North American Charging Standard (NACS), allowing usage of Tesla’s Supercharger network.
External differences between the two trim options is seen in the exterior colourways available: The Signature is available in Calm White, Tidal Grey, and Core Black while the Origin only comes in Core Black.
Additionally, The Origin gets 19-inch wheels whereas the Signature has 21-inch wheels instead.
Deliveries for the AFEELA 1 begins in mid-2026 in the US for the Signature variant, while deliveries of the Origin variant will take place sometime in 2027.
SHM is also planning to schedule the delivery of the Sony-Honda AFEELA 1 to the Japanese market sometime in 2026. However, the exact timeline on when it will or what trim levels it will receive is still unknown.
