Starting in September 2025, EURO 5 petrol will be introduced in Malaysia as part of the government’s long-term plan to improve national air quality.
Euro 5 petrol contains lower sulphur content and cleaner exhaust emissions compared to the current EURO 4M standard. This cleaner fuel is expected to significantly reduce air pollution, leading to improved respiratory health and a decrease in smog-forming pollutants.
According to a report by Utusan Malaysia, the full implementation of EURO 5 petrol is expected by 2027 and will adhere to the Environmental Quality (Control of Petrol and Diesel Fuel Contents) Regulations 2007.
Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, highlighted the positive impact of this change. “The adoption of Euro 5 petrol is a sustainable solution that will positively impact Malaysia’s air quality,” he said.
“Vehicles equipped with Euro 5 emission technology will operate more efficiently and produce cleaner exhaust emissions, aligning with the government’s efforts to combat air pollution,” Nik Nazmi added.
Before this, the government has completely phased out the Euro 2M standard that originated from the mid-90s, offering just EURO 5M diesel.
“Previously, the country took proactive steps to address air pollution by introducing Euro 5 diesel fuel in April 2021, reaching full specification by April 2023,” Nik Nazmi added.
