Attention all fully-electric vehicle (EV) owners in Malaysia – were you interested in the new JPJ ePlate but couldn’t get it before? Well, now you can! The new standardised number plate will soon be available for purchase and installed on all EVs in the country starting November 9th, 2024.
So how do you get one? Unlike previously announced, pre-booking of the JPJ ePlate ethrough the website is no longer necessary. Instead, interested EV owners can would just need to contact their nearest authorised installers – a list of authorised installers can be found here here.
The authorised installer will then place the order to Handal Ceria, the manufacturer and distributor of the licence plates as appointed by JPJ, with a quotation furnished to you that will include both the RM98 fee for the JPJ ePlate and RFID sticker, alongside any additional fees for installation – the latter will be at the installer’s liberty.
Once the order is placed, the installer will then schedule an appointment for you to bring your vehicle over for installation.
Previously, only EVs registered after September 9th, 2024 were required to have the JPJ ePlate, as mandated by the ministry of transport (MoT). Now, EV owners with vehicles registered before this date can also install the new “smart” number plate.
For the time being, the JPJ ePlate is exclusively for EVs, but it may be expanded to all vehicles in Malaysia in the future, as the government plans to eventually phase out the current acrylic licence plates.

The JPJ ePlate is built to the European/UN number plate standards and is based on the IDePlate technology from German company Toennjes which features several safety systems designed to prevent forgery and fraud.
Non-EV owners will need to wait a little longer to have the JPJ ePlate on your car. Vehicle documentation must be submitted as part of the registration process so you’re out of luck for the time being.
