Get ready to go electric without breaking the bank! Perodua’s first EV is set to be priced under RM100,000, as revealed by Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the tabling of the 2025 national budget (Belanjawan 2025) at the Dewan Rakyat today.
No other information was revealed, but the upcoming national EV is widely expected to be based on the Perodua EMO-I concept car, which was previewed at Malaysia Autoshow 2024 earlier this year. The concept is essentially a fully electric Perodua Myvi, providing clues to this highly anticipated local EV.
The EMO-I concept is powered by a single electric motor that drives the front wheels, making 163 hp (120 kW) and 315 Nm. This enables the EMO-I to sprint from 0-100 km/h in an estimated time of seven to nine seconds.
In terms of range, the Perodua EMO-I has a targeted range of 400 km from a 57.6 kWh battery pack. The battery can be charged at a maximum AC charging rate of 11 kW, taking five hours and 15 minutes to fully charge, and a maximum DC charging rate of 50 kW, taking an hour and 10 minutes to fully charge.
Intriguingly, it has been revealed that Perodua is developing its first EV with the help of an undisclosed “international automotive company” instead (in addition?) of Daihatsu, according to a social media post by Minister of International Trade and Industry YB Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Bin Tengku Abdul Aziz.
Mass production for the Perodua EV has also previously been said to begin in 2025, although Anwar did not comment on the specific timeline during the budget tabling today.
