It has only been two years since the Omoda 5 graced the roads, but Chery has decided that it’s time to give it a facelift update. It’s not launched officially just yet, but the first (and only!) image of the new car has now been revealed by Omoda Russia.
With only one angle to go by, there’s of course a significant chunk of the car that we still don’t know about yet. But from what we can see, the front fascia has now been redesigned, featuring a new grille pattern together with sleeker arrow-shaped LED daytime-running lights (DRLs), a la the Omoda E5. In between the new DRLs is now a new black bar, with the ‘Omoda’ script printed on it.

The wheels come with a new design as well. In terms of how much the rear part of the car has been changed or not will be answered in due time. Beyond that, the Chery Omoda 5 looks identical from before, with its “Art of Motion” design language that boasts a blend of sharp lines and loud design touches.
Performance-wise, it will likely remain the same. That means a 1.5-litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 156 hp and 230 Nm of torque. It is paired to a nine-virtual speed continuous variable transmission (CVT), driving the front wheels only.

Globally, Omoda and Jaecoo (collectively known as “O&J”) function as separate brands outside China to support Chery’s export strategy – although they usually share the same dealers separate from its parent company.
In Malaysia, however, the Omoda brand is currently marketed under Chery, while Jaecoo exists as a separate brand with its standalone dealerships. With the new Omoda Malaysia branding and social media pages, though, it appears we could soon be following the same strategy used in other markets too. Could we see the Chery Omoda 5 be renamed to just ‘Omoda C5’?
