Smart #5 EV unveiled – 740 km range, 800V architecture

Smart has finally unveiled the Smart #5, its third all-electric model that joins the #3 and the #1. It is the biggest Smart ever and it is also the first Smart electric vehicle (EV) to be equipped with an 800 V architecture. According to the company, the Smart #5 is its most versatile vehicle to date.

In terms of size, the Smart #5 is rather similar to the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Tesla Model Y, and Xpeng G6, with an overall length measuring 4,705 mm and a wheelbase measuring 2,900 mm. It was designed by Mercedes-Benz and comes with “typical Smart design elements” such as the panoramic halo roof, frameless doors, and the short front and rear overhangs. So far, Smart has unveiled the Smart #5 Summit Edition and the Smart #5 Premium+ variant.

Among the distinct exterior characteristics of the Smart #5 are its oblong headlights at the front and rear, the Smart logo on the D-pillar, dual-coloured mirrors, and floating wheel caps which remain upright when the wheels spin. Exclusive to the Smart #5 Summit Edition are items like a roof light bar, an electric trailer hitch, underbody protection, a roof carrier, side steps, a side bag, and a side ladder included in the package.

Inside, the Smart #5’s standard equipment includes its zero-gravity seats with 121° of recline, seat heating, an electric sunshield, airplane-style LED reading lights, oak wood trims, and a 256-colour ambient lighting system. The entertainment system features a built-in projector paired with a Sennheiser Signature Sound System with 20 speakers and a portable speaker.

Interestingly, the Smart #5 also allows users to adjust their seats to create multiple sleeping configurations. According to their needs, users could create a king-size, queen-size, or a single sleeping space in the cockpit.

Similar to Mercedes-Benz’s Hyperscreen design, the cabin of the Smart #5 also gets an arsenal of screens on the dashboard. It is equipped with a 25.6-inch Augmented Reality Head-up Display, a 10.3-inch full-colour Ultra HD LCD instrument cluster, and two 13-inch AMOLED 2.5K displays. A state-of-the-art generative AI voice assistant enables the driver to use a variety of sources to provide precise answers to almost any question.

Featured for the first time in a Smart EV is an 800-V platform that allows for enhanced levels of performance in terms of charging speed and range. Smart has yet to reveal the full technical details of the Smart #5 but it is revealed to get a 100-kWh battery that provides over 740 km of range (CLTC). Thanks to the 800V architecture, charging the 100 kWh battery from 10% to 80% only takes 15 minutes.

Full details of the Smart #5 will be revealed upon its market launch. However, according to information revealed by China’s MIIT back in June 2024, its powertrain options include a 340 hp single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) setup and a 646 hp dual-motor setup. It is set to be launched and delivered in Europe at the beginning of 2025.
