Chery makes Malaysia its ASEAN production hub, to begin exports by end of 2024 – Tengku Zafrul

Chery will begin exporting its cars from Malaysia (produced at its new Shah Alam plant) by the end of 2024. This was revealed by the Malaysian Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Tengku Zafrul Aziz in his recent social media post.

The minister had a meeting with Chery Malaysia as the company presented its plans to make Malaysia as its export hub for the Southeast Asian region and beyond. As quoted by the minister himself in his posting, the export plans are set to begin by the end of the year.

Chery’s plans to export its cars from the Shah Alam plant are not new as the company announced in July 2024 that it “plans to explore exporting vehicles to neighbouring right-hand-drive countries, leveraging Malaysia’s strategic location and robust automotive ecosystem.” The new development of the matter is that the exports will begin by the end of 2024.

According to Chery International President, Zhang Guibing, the company’s long-term plan includes ensuring that local partners are content and engaged, creating significant job opportunities for Malaysians, and introducing new technologies to the local market.

Back in November 2023, Chery Malaysia pledged an investment of RM1 billion to support Malaysia’s New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030. In a press release, Chery Malaysia stated, “This long-term commitment underscores the brand’s confidence in Malaysia’s potential, bolstered by the country’s policies and dedication to fostering growth and innovation within the automotive sector.”

Chery Malaysia currently has few cars in its lineup. This includes the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro, Omoda 5, Tiggo 7 Pro, and the Omoda E5. Chery’s sub-brand Jaecoo has also been recently launched in Malaysia with the Jaecoo J7 as its pilot model. Another sub-brand by Chery is Jetout which recently made an appearance at Malaysia Autoshow 2024.
