The new petrol MINI Cooper 5-Door (F65) is actually a “heavily facelifted” version of its old self

After debuting the petrol-powered MINI Cooper 3-Door in February this year, MINI has debuted its more practical sibling, the new MINI Cooper 5-Door. Like in the past, this 5-door version of the Cooper is made for those who want the fun looks and driving experience of a classic MINI Cooper but require more practicality and seats. The Cooper 5-Door has a 72 mm longer wheelbase and a 172 mm longer body than its 3-door counterpart.

Like the Cooper 3-Door, the new Cooper 5-Door is actually a heavily facelifted version of the third-generation F55 MINI Cooper 5-Door hatchback. So no, they are not built on the all-new platform co-developed with GWM, known as the Lemon platform, that underpins its all-new all-electric siblings.

On the outside, MINI has updated the new Cooper 5-Door’s design to look as close to the all-new all-electric models. New bits here include the new circular LED headlights which come with optional circular LED DRLs that surround the outline of the round headlights. At the centre of its face is the new octagonal front grille found on MINI’s latest products. At the back are the triangular LED taillights that remind us of the eye holes on Spiderman’s mask.

Wheel-wise, the new Cooper 5-Door can be fitted with alloy wheels ranging from 16 to 18 inches. There is also the JCW trim sports styling package that can be added as an option. To match its fun looks, the 5-door hatchback’ exterior colour library contains a total of 11 body colours and 3 roof colours.

Performance-wise, this new 5-door hatchback comes with two engine options, with the first one being the 1.5-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder petrol engine that produces 156 hp and 230 Nm. This enables the hatchback to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.0 seconds.

The second engine option is the more powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine that puts out 204 hp and 300 Nm. With this mill, the century sprint can be done in just 6.8 seconds.

Moving inside the new Cooper 5-Door, you will find an interior with MINI’s latest design language. The most eye-catching part here has to be the 9.4-inch circular OLED touchscreen head unit that runs on the latest MINI Operating System 9, featuring the “Hey MINI” voice assistant.

Like other new MINI models, the Cooper 5-Door comes without a dedicated instrument cluster. So you will have to rely on either the central touchscreen or a head-up display (HUD) to see how fast you’re going.

In the name of minimalism, the gear selector and twist-to-start knob are all located just below the circular display. And oh, there’s a new steering wheel here too which looks pretty stylish. What do you think of the new MINI Cooper 5-Door? Do share your thoughts with us.
