Video: 2024 Chery Omoda E5 review – a worthy rival to the BYD Atto 3



Just launched this year, the Chery Omoda E5 is a new alternative to the previously unrivaled BYD Atto 3. Adding an ‘E’ to the Omoda 5 name, the EV SUV from Chery is sold in a single variant only in Malaysia and it costs RM146,800. And we’re pretty sure some of you who are shopping for an EV SUV are undecided between the two.

If you’re looking for the exact competitor of the Chery Omoda E5, it would be the BYD Atto 3 Extended Range, as it provides 420 km of range on the WLTP test cycle. The Chery Omoda E5 houses a similarly sized 61 kWh battery pack and can provide 430 km of range on the WLTP test cycle. On paper, both cars look very similar. As for the basic specs of the Chery Omoda E5, it is a single-motor front-wheel drive (FWD) EV that makes 150 kW and 340 Nm. As of March 2024, Chery’s official brochure listed its century sprint time at 7.6 seconds (although it now appears to be updated to a faster 7.2 seconds). The spec sheet also suggests a top speed of 172 km/h.

Its battery has a capacity of 61 kWh and this provides an electric range of 430 km. According to Chery, the Omoda E5 can be charged from 30% to 80% in just 28 minutes with DC fast charging. It is able to handle a maximum DC charging rate of 80 kW and a maximum AC charging rate of 9.9 kW. The Omoda E5’s unique AC charging rate of 9.9 kW is achieved with a three-phase supply and a current of 14 A.
