Chery Malaysia sold 7,000 cars in 5 months, over 80% are the Omoda 5

Chery Malaysia made its official return to the Malaysian market last year and launched two SUVs in the country upon the brand debut, the Omoda 5 and the Tiggo 8 Pro. At a press conference today, the brand announced that as of February this year, a total of 5,800 units of the Chery Omoda 5 and 1,200 units of the Tiggo 8 Pro have been registered in Malaysia, summing a total of 7,000 Chery cars registered in Malaysia since its return. This is according to statistics provided by the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA).

Having made their Malaysian market launch together in July last year, the Chery Omoda 5 is offered in two variants, C and H. The Tiggo 8 Pro on the other hand is available in a sole variant only. Deliveries of the revived Chery cars in Malaysia began in late September, thus it has only been 5 months since Chery began selling its vehicles in Malaysia.

Bringing the fight to B-segment SUVs in Malaysia like the Proton X50 and Honda HR-V, the prices for the Omoda 5 start at RM108,800 for the C variant, while the H variant can be yours at RM118,800. Meanwhile, the D-segment Tiggo 8 Pro is priced at RM159,800, and it competes against the likes of the Proton X90 and Mazda CX-8.

Despite having launched three models, including all-electric the Chery Omoda E5 which has just made its Malaysian market launch today, in less than a year, Chery Malaysia won’t be slowing down anytime soon. The Chinese carmaker confirmed earlier this year that it will be launching its Tiggo 7 Pro C-segment SUV in Malaysia within the first half of 2024.

Aside from the Tiggo 7 Pro, the company also mentioned that it will be offering something more affordable for the rakyat by launching a sub-RM100k model this year. Looking at Chery’s lineup, the Tiggo 4 Pro appears to be the model most likely the one Chery Malaysia is referring to. If launched in Malaysia, this sub-RM100k SUV from Chery will be competing against the likes of A-segment SUVs like the Honda WR-V and the Perodua Ativa.
