BMW Munich plant to stop making ICE cars in 2027, Neue Klasse EVs production starting 2026



The BMW Munich plant will stop making internal combustion engine (ICE) cars in 2027, which will end its 75-year history of building such cars, reported Autocar. The German carmaker will be putting down EUR650 million (approx. RM3.3 billion) of investment to expand the site, which is currently 102 years old, having opened in 1922.

Just about two months ago, the plant officially halted production for engines, which have been moved to Hams Halls in the UK and Steyr in Austria. This is to make space for the four new buildings BMW is constructing, which involve a new vehicle assembly line and a new body shop.

The brand’s next-generation Neue Klasse EVs will also be made at the BMW Munich plant from 2026, including what will be BMW’s new 3-Series. Before the site goes full EV, the car will be made alongside the brand’s other ICE models.

By 2027, the plant will be fully dedicated to just EVs, although the company has yet to announce which models it will be producing. A smart guess would be the Neue Klasse EVs, as the German firm did mention that it will be launching six Neue Klasse EVs between 2025 and 2027. So far we have seen glimpses of a saloon and an SUV from the Neue Klasse lineup.

BMW i4 M50

At the moment, the BMW Munich plant produces models such as the BMW 3 Series, which includes the touring estate, M3, as well as the 330e and 320e plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models. The 4 Series Gran Coupe and all-electric i4 are also made in BMW’s home town, which produces around 1,000 cars per day.

The Munich plant won’t be the only one producing BMW’s Neue Klasse EVs, as the task will also be shared with the carmaker’s plant in Debrecen Hungary in 2026. Other sites including Shenyang in China, and San Luis Potosi in Mexico will also be joining in at a later date.
