Volkswagen issues recall for 6,671 vehicles in Malaysia for Takata airbag replacement

Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) today announced a product recall for 6,671 vehicles produced between 2010 and 2014, which could potentially be equipped with faulty Takata airbags.

Affected models for the latest recall exercise include the sixth-generation Golf GTI, Eos, Passat CC, Polo, Beetle, and Vento.

According to a press release, the recall concerns a “specific driver front airbag gas generator housing”, which could be faulty due to the “deterioration of the generator’s propellant due to high air humidity and temperature fluctuations over a long period of time”.

If left unfixed, the airbag gas generator could result in potential injury on the driver and passenger, the company says.

VPCM reassures that it has taken the necessary steps with its dealer partners to ensure parts availability in order to conduct the recall exercise smoothly and efficiently. The nationwide recall will be carried out in phases to manage the number of cases.

Affected customers, based on the Volkswagen database, will be notified via email and WhatsApp in order to process the recall. Customers can also check if their vehicles are affected by the recall by visiting VPCM’s website (link here), and entering their vehicle’s 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

Customers who have purchased their vehicles through a previous owner or a used car dealership are also advised to urgently contact their nearest Volkswagen authorised dealer for verification.

Should any parts require replacement, all labour and replacement parts for this service will be done at no cost to the owners.

Earlier this year, VPCM’s sister company PHS Automotive also announced a recall exercise for Audi vehicles on the issue of Takata airbag replacements.
