Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance debuts – PHEV 4.0L V8 biturbo, 816hp, 1,420Nm

The Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance has made its debut as the most powerful SL model. On the outside, it is practically still recognisable as an SL roadster, but now sports several new exterior design elements.

The new exterior design elements include an integrated plug-in loading flap, grooved trapezoidal twin tailpipe trims, and a set of 20-inch matt black multi-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels. The Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance’s model name at the back is also highlighted in red.

Powering the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance is an AMG-specific E Performance plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology. The system sports a 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine, paired with the AMG Electric Drive unit, and an AMG Speedshift MCT 9G transmission.

As a result, the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance’s system output is rated at 816 hp, while its system torque is rated at 1,080 Nm. Its torque output can also be boosted up to 1,420 Nm. With power sent to all four wheels via the brand’s 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system, the performance roadster can perform the century sprint in 2.9 seconds, and reach a top speed of 317 km/h.

The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 hybrid racing car-inspired AMG High-Performance 400V hybrid battery found in the roadster offers a capacity of 6.1 kWh and can provide 94 hp of continuous power and 201 hp of peak power.

This allows the performance roadster to travel up to 13 km (EAER) in pure electric vehicle (EV) mode. When the battery runs out of juice, it can be replenished using the 3.7 kW on-board AC charger.

Underpinning the most powerful SL roadster is the AMG Active Ride Control suspension, which packs both active roll stabilisation and active rear-axle steering technologies.

Providing stopping power to the performance roadster is a ceramic high-performance composite brake system. A regenerative braking system with four levels of recoupment has also been fitted onto the SL 63 S E Performance, making one-pedal driving possible.

Inside, the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance is equipped with the German carmaker’s MBUX multimedia system. The system contains numerous AMG and hybrid-specific displays and functions.

Featuring a 2+2 seating setup, the performance roadster’s front AMG sports seats are electrically adjustable. The seats come with a choice of one- or two-tone Nappa leather, along with Microcut microfibre and contrasting topstitching in yellow or red.
