The Mitsuoka M55 Concept is a Honda Civic FL1 hatchback underneath its retro looks

Mitsuoka is famous for turning the average modern-day car into a blast from the past – think of the S15-based Le Seyde and the MX-5-based Rock Star. Now, Mitsuoka has taken the FL1 Honda Civic and turned it into a retro hatchback, which it calls the Mitsuoka M55 Concept. Yes, it is only a concept for now and the company has yet to announce any production plans for the car.

What’s the most bizarre thing about the Mitsuoka M55 Concept would be the car that it is based on – the FL1 Honda Civic Hatchback. It isn’t available in Malaysia, but it’s pretty much the hatchback counterpart of the FE Honda Civic Sedan in Malaysia.

Also available in Malaysia (albeit in very limited units) is the FL5 Honda Civic Type R.What’s the most bizarre thing about the Mitsuoka M55 Concept would be the car that it is based on the FL1 Honda Civic Hatchback. As to why the concept is called the Mitsuoka M55 Concept, well, the numbers indicate the year Mitsuoka has been in business. Founded in 1968, Mitsuoka celebrates its 55th anniversary with the M55 Concept.

Addressing why the M55 Concept sports a very American look, Mitsuoka on its special page for M55 Concept states, “For our company, which was founded in 1968, the 1970s was an important era that laid the foundation for today’s business. At that time, there was a torrent of energy within us full of dreams and hopes.”

Recognise that interior?

“The Americanized Japanese identity also influences the design of cars. Under the period of high economic growth, the performance of automobiles improved and GT-type cars appeared. The colour television, air conditioner, and car, which were called the new three sacred treasures, also became explosively popular. The times were hot and swirling like magma, and culture was at its dawn.”

Mitsuoka will be exhibiting the Mitsuoka M55 Concept at its Azabu showroom/gallery from November 24 to December 16, 2023. It will also be showcasing the car at its Toyama showroom from January 12 to 24, 2024.
