Suzuki Swift Concept to debut soon, 6MT dropped from current Japan lineup

Suzuki will be exhibiting at the Japan Mobility Show 2023, which will be held at the Tokyo Big Sight from October 26 to November 5, 2023. Among the cars the carmaker will be exhibiting at the auto show is the next-generation Suzuki Swift Concept, which seems to be a slightly tweaked version of the current model.

Suzuki has provided a photo of the next-gen Suzuki Swift Concept, giving us a look at its front and sides. Compared to the current model, the concept model features rather significant changes, albeit still easily recognisable as a Swift.

At the front, the hatchback has now been rounded off. This includes its clamshell-shaped bonnet, as well as the grille, which reminds us of a MINI Cooper. The headlights on the other hand now feature sharper lines than before. The Japanese carmaker has not published rear shots of the concept car, but its side profile and roofline look pretty similar to the current model.

Powering the new Japanese hatchback is said to be a high-efficiency engine capable of striking a balance between driving performance and fuel efficiency. Just a few months back, Japanese publication Bestcarweb reported that the regular Suzuki Swift will be sporting a mild hybrid system consisting of a 1.2-litre inline-three engine and an electric motor.

The sportier Swift Sport on the other hand is expected to feature a mild hybrid system as well, but with a more powerful 1.4-litre inline-four turbocharged engine. However, it is to be noted that the Japanese carmaker has yet to announce any details regarding its next-gen hatchback’s powertrain, therefore we will have to see.

However, what has been confirmed is that the 6-speed manual option has been dropped from the current generation Suzuki Swift Sport lineup in Japan. Therefore, there is a high chance that the upcoming hot hatch will only be available with a 6-speed automatic transmission moving forward.

The Japanese hatchback is said to continue with the “drive & feel” concept, which should mean that the new Swift will continue to succeed its predecessors’ nimble handling. Interestingly, Suzuki will also be shifting from tangible consumption to experiential consumption with the Swift Concept.

The Suzuki Swift Concept will not only provide “design” and “drive”, but also propose new value of having fun with your car in your everyday life.

Safety-wise, the Japanese hatchback will be equipped with a series of advanced safety features. This includes dual sensor brake support II (DSBSII), collision mitigation braking system (CMBS), adaptive high beam system (AHBS), and driver monitoring system (DMS).

Launched back in 2017, the current generation Suzuki Swift has been around for six years, and one would expect a facelift or an all-new generation Swift to be in the process of development already. And you are probably right, as the all-new fourth-generation Suzuki Swift is reportedly making its world debut this year, with its hot hatch sibling – the Swift Sport coming sometime next year, according to Bestcarweb.
