Not only taking our jobs, ChatGPT is now in Mercedes-Benz’s voice control system

ChatGPT is now available in certain Mercedes-Benz cars through an optional beta testing programme in the United States. Yes, the popular artificial intelligence language processing tool will now be used for Mercedes-Benz’s voice control system for over 900,000 vehicles equipped with the MBUX infotainment system. The beta testing programme begins today, June 16, 2023.

Customers who wish to participate in the programme may do so through the Mercedes Me app or simply say “Hey Mercedes, I want to join the beta programme” through their car’s voice command system. The rollout will happen over the air so customers can do it from wherever they wish.

With ChatGPT added to the voice command system, the MBUX Hey Mercedes voice command system will become even more intuitive. As Mercedes-Benz says, “While most voice assistants are limited to predefined tasks and responses, Chat GPT leverages a large language model to greatly improve natural language understanding and expand the topics to which it can respond.”

Only a beta testing programme for now, the use of ChatGPT in the MBUX voice command will soon enable you to have conversations with your car’s voice command system. It is expected that the implementation will allow the voice command system to provide you with a more comprehensive answer to questions regarding a destination or even a new dinner recipe.

Of course, the use of ChatGPT for the Mercedes-Benz voice command system is enabled through a collaboration with Microsoft. As for concerns regarding data privacy, Mercedes-Benz retains complete control over the IT processes in the background. The voice command data collected is stored in the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud, where it is anonymized and analysed.

Mercedes-Benz Group AG Chief Technology Officer, Markus Schäfer said, “The integration of ChatGPT with Microsoft in our controlled cloud environment is a milestone on our way to making our cars the centre of our customers’ digital lives. Our beta programme boosts the existing Hey Mercedes functions such as navigation queries, weather requests and others with the capabilities of ChatGPT. This way, we aim to support conversations with natural dialogues and follow-up questions. Our customers can always rely on us to ensure the best possible protection of their data privacy. Everything is under one big goal: Redefining the relationship with your Mercedes.”
