Soon to make its full return in the Malaysian market is Chery, the car carmaker from China. With plans to establish 70 showrooms nationwide, Chery has just announced that its showroom units are currently being shipped from China. Chery will soon locally assemble (CKD) its cars in Malaysia, but its showroom units for now will be fully imported (CBU).
Through images shared by Chery, its SUVs can be seen at a port during a “Delivery Ceremony of the initial collection of Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro to Chery Malaysia” event. Part of the showroom units are 2 units of the Omoda 5 and 2 units of the Tiggo 8 Pro, but Chery has not detailed the total number of cars being shipped to Malaysia.
Both the Omoda 5 and the Tiggo 8 Pro were previously on display at the Malaysia Autoshow 2023. The Omoda 5 is a futuristic-looking 5-seater SUV while the Tiggo 8 Pro is a 7-seater SUV.
During Chery’s initial preview in 2022, Chery revealed that the Omoda 5 will be offered with a 1.5-litre turbo option (154 hp/230 Nm) and a 1.6-litre turbo option (194 hp/290 Nm). A fully-electric Omoda 5 is also planned for Malaysia.

As for the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro, it will be initially offered with a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four engine, making up to 250 hp and 390 Nm. Only the front wheels are driven, and power is transmitted via a 7-speed DCT. A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the Tiggo 8 Pro will also be launched in Malaysia and it consists of a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine and 2 electric motors. The system outputs 241 hp and 510 Nm.
At the Malaysia Autoshow this year, Chery announced that it plans to have 70 showrooms nationwide. Out of those planned, 30 are currently undergoing renovations. During the event as well, Chery announced that it has appointed Inokom as its local assembly partner. If all goes well, the local assembly of Chery cars should begin in June 2023.
