Chery Omoda 5 open for pre-booking in Indonesia – cheaper than the Honda HR-V!

Chery has opened the order books to the Omoda 5 crossover in Indonesia, at the currently ongoing Indonesia International Motor Show 2023 (IIMS 2023). Offered in two variants, the Chery Omoda 5 is estimated to be priced from just IDR328 million (approx. RM96k) in the Archipelago, placing it below the starting price of a Honda HR-V!

Both of those variants will be powered by the same 1.5-litre ‘TCI’ turbocharged inline-four engine, making 147 hp and 230 Nm. The engine is paired to a CVT gearbox to send drive to the front wheels.

Back when Chery made its first official preview in Malaysia, the company mentioned that the Omoda 5 will also be offered with a 1.6-litre turbocharged mill here in our markets. However, it seems that this option will not be available in Indonesia. Furthermore, the stated horsepower figure is also curiously lower than the outputs from the same mill in China (154 hp).

In terms of equipment, the Chery Omoda 5 in Indonesia comes as standard with fully-LED lighting on the outside across both variants, alongside a set of 18-inch wheels, and the dual 10.25-inch displays on the inside for the infotainment display and digital instrument cluster – the former featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Dual-zone climate control, wireless charging pad, and the funky ambient lighting system on the dashboard trim are all standard across both variants, but only the range-topping ‘RZ’ variant will come with the premium creature comforts, including powered driver seats (with ventilation for the front passengers), a powered tailgate, powered sunroof, the eight-speaker Sony sound system, heated side mirrors, and sequential LED turn indicators.

The advanced driver assistance system is thankfully standard across the range, with features including adaptive cruise control with low speed follow function, integrated cruise assist, lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, and intelligent high beam. Opting for the range-topping RZ variant will also net you an additional 360-degree surround view monitor.

Again, the Indonesian pricing for the Chery Omoda 5 still isn’t confirmed yet, but it could be indicative of what we’ll be getting – both in terms of specifications and pricing – when the compact crossover eventually launches in Malaysia!

The Omoda 5 crossover is part of Chery Malaysia’s ‘Phase One’ plans, alongside the larger Tiggo 8 Pro. A concrete launch date is still not available yet, but we expect it to be sometime in the second half of this year.
