Is Tesla officially coming to Malaysia? ‘Tesla Sdn Bhd’ registered for retail of new vehicles!

While there are Tesla cars on our roads here in Malaysia, the American carmaker has never had an official representation in our country. To date, most of the Tesla cars on sale here in Malaysia were imported via third-party independent dealers not officially supported by Tesla – but that may soon change, as it appears that the American marque may soon have an official retail operation here on our shores.

The rumour came about from a business registration document from the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) that was circulating online, revealing that the existing Tesla Services Sdn Bhd subsidiary has since October 2022 undergone a name change to now just ‘Tesla Sdn Bhd’.

But the most intriguing part of the document is actually at the section ‘Nature of Business’, where it states “wholesale and retail of new vehicles” as its main activity, alongside “maintenance and repair of motor vehicles”. This is certainly a new development, as the previous company was merely a remote financial shared services subsidiary located in Penang, providing accounting and finance-related services to the APAC and EMEA region.

Now that Tesla has an official retail operation in Thailand and Singapore, it would make logical sense for the company to expand into Malaysia as well, as it could open up the doors to setting up a cross-country Supercharger network, something the company has mulled since May this year after a discussion with the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA).

There has been no official word from the American carmaker as of the time of writing, but we probably won’t have to wait too much longer for more information.
