Porsche dedicates this special-edition 911 GTS Cabriolet to America

At the end of the year, Porsche will begin the sale of the 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet ‘America’ that carries on the tradition that began in 1952 – offering an open-top sports car exclusively for enthusiasts in North America.

The long-standing tradition began when Max Hoffman, the first importer of Porsche cars into the US began selling the 356, followed by the 356 America Roadster in 1953. The latter model had all the bare essentials removed and subsequently inspired the 356 Speedster. Only 16 units of the 356 America Roadster were ever built.

40 years later, Porsche revived the idea with the 964 generation 911. The car featured a wide body, improved brakes and suspension with 17-inch Porsche Cup wheels from the 911 Turbo.

As the name suggests, the ‘America’ edition is based on the 992-generation 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet which means there’s 480 hp and 570 Nm to play with; from a 3.0-litre turbocharged 6-cylinder boxer engine. As it is for enthusiasts, it’s only available with a 7-speed manual gearbox, with power sent to the rear-wheels – music to the enthusiast’s ears.

“This is also the perfect time to add another ‘America’ model to our story as we look back on 70 years since the 356 America Roadster and 30 years since the 964 America Roadster,” says Porsche Cars North America, President and CEO, Kjell Gruner.

Among the optional packages which will be standard in the ‘America’ model is the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) Sport, Sport Exhaust, and the Sport Chrono Package.

Brakes are cast iron units with six-piston callipers in the front and four-piston units at the rear. Model-specific items also include an instrument cluster in White, seat belts in Red, and a Black leather interior.

Specially for the ‘America’ edition is the Azureblue356 paint job by Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, inspired by the 1953 356 America Roadster. Complementing the exclusive paint job are RS Spyder Design wheels finished in White, Silver and Red for a striking appearance. The same White, Silver and Red treatment are applied to the door panel stitching in the cabin.
