Next-generation Subaru WRX STI models could be hybrids!

Whenever a new Subaru WRX is revealed, it’s safe to assume that a WRX STI model will follow suit eventually but in the case of the latest generation as revealed last year, that won’t be the case.

As you’d expect, it’s all down to regulations. A spokesperson for the company said that with regulations changing so quickly it just wouldn’t make any sense to develop an STI version.

It was added that if the new STI were to be designed now, it would only be revealed later on and hence it would have a very short and limited shelf life. As such, it wouldn’t make financial sense for the company.

Subaru also hinted at what a Subaru WRX STI of the future could be like, highlighting that it is exploring opportunities for the next-generation Subaru WRX STI, including electrification.

In a company press release, Subaru said, “As the automotive marketplace continues to move towards electrification, Subaru is focused on how our future sports and performance cars should evolve to meet the needs of the changing marketplace and the regulations and requirements for greenhouse gasses and zero-emissions vehicles.”

The company also highlighted that the next-generation internal combustion engine WRX STI will not be produced based on the new and current WRX platform.

In assuring its customers, Subaru said the STI brand represents the pinnacle of Subaru’s performance vehicles built from Subaru’s rally heritage and its next generation of vehicles will incorporate the essence of STI.
