Illegal drag racing with cash prizes and more in Johor clamped down

Last weekend, police in Johor raided an illegal drag race just 50 metres off the Skudai Toll Plaza (Southbound) in Johor, after a month of monitoring.

Illegal drag races on the North-South Expressway stretch have been rampant on weekends and public holidays, taking place between 1 am to 4 am.

Just like the fictional drag racers these people are trying to emulate, cash prizes are given to the race winners but at the raid, it seems money was not the only reward.

According to police chief Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat, prizes for race winners also included women. The police chief also believes there could be a syndicate involved in organising such events.

The drag races run between 700 to 900 metres, with the illegal organisers even blocking off the highway with a “Bus Kilang” to conduct their race.

A total of 126 individuals were detained, 19 of whom were female. Among them, only six drivers aged between 22 to 25 years old were identified as the “racers” while the rest were mere spectators in a report by Astro Awani. Among the six racers, three tested positive for drugs. According to TV3, 66 cars were confiscated in the raid.
