Petronas Lubricants unveils next-gen Iona EV fluids – improved efficiency, for OEM use

EVs are the future, and with electrification becoming more and more commonplace in the automotive industry, petroleum and lubricant companies also need to adapt to even stick around in the future. With that in mind, Petronas Lubricants International (PLI) has unveiled its next-generation Petronas Iona fluids specifically designed for EVs, with an emphasis on efficiency.

The Iona fluids range was actually first launched two years ago in 2019. In this new second-generation Iona range, Petronas has further developed the lubricants and coolants to further keep up with the rapid changes in EV technology – particularly in friction and wear control within electric drive units and e-axles, thermal management, energy efficiency, and reliability.

“We believe that e-mobility is expanding at a rapid pace. With this rapid growth, innovative solutions are key to accelerate the move towards e-mobility for a more sustainable future,” said PLI Managing Director and Group Chief Executive Officer, Giuseppe D’Arrigo.

The company has been working with a wide range of partners – including Imperial College, FEV Group, and IAV – since 2018 to co-engineer safe, high-performing, and dependable fluids specifically for electric powertrain. The new second-generation Petronas Iona fluids, which will be tailor-made to suit each carmakers’ demands, are borne directly from this collaboration.

The new range of Iona EV Fluids is in line with PLI’s commitment towards sustainability, first announced back in 2018. According to its roadmap, 75% of its Research and Technology investments will be directed at reducing emissions, which in turn supports its larger goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
