Mercedes-Benz turns recycled airbags into one-off clothing line

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a new collection in collaboration with American designer Heron Preston made of recycled airbags and other discarded materials from their vehicles.

The clothing line pays tribute to the 50th anniversary of the airbag patent and the 40th anniversary of the first airbags in a Mercedes-Benz vehicle, in the S-Class back in 1981.

This also made Mercedes-Benz the first car manufacturer to integrate the airbag in passenger cars more than 40 years ago.

A very interesting statement in the press release also caught our attention. It said ‘The functionality of the airbag is mirrored through the collection’s ability to inflate and deflate’, suggesting that the 6-piece one-off clothing line could inflate and deflate but they did not elaborate further.

The upcycled airbags will be available via a giveaway on the global lifestyle platform GOAT from September 10th.
