Tata Motors in India trolls Suzuki – it may have backfired

Automotive rivalries aren’t a new thing. For years we’ve seen big brands like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi taking cheeky jabs and little swipes at each other to make a statement, over the silliest thing but they’ve always threaded on the side of caution, good taste, and class. On that note, we’re a little on the fence with this Twitter post by Tata Motors in India earlier today.

The post on Twitter took aim at its rival Maruti Suzuki over the Swift’s poor results in the LATIN NCAP crash test. It scored 0-stars and only received 15.53% rating for Adult Occupant Protection and 0% for Child Occupant Protection. Just to give you an idea of where it stands, the Perodua Ativa scored over 40% for Child Occupant Protection and a total of 5-stars in the ASEAN NCAP tests.

Here’s how the post looked like:

Without going into the specifics, it’s safe to assume that our opinions of the post are the same. Even though Tata adopted a relatively ‘friendly tone’, it could be interpreted very differently.

The post was clearly aimed at the Swift with some clever alphabet play and a hint of vulgarity. It’s smart and really creative, especially with the “DON’T GAMBLE WITH SAFETY” tagline and the slot machines.

This is more like it. We miss this!

Adding to the post was the caption, “Latest NCAP safety test shows that it’s not safe to ride ‘Swift’ly. Yet another reason for you to book New Tiago – the #SeriouslyFun hatchback rated 4 stars for safety by Global NCAP.”

We’re guessing that it didn’t sit well with some quarters because as we’re writing this, Tata’s post which was uploaded just today has been removed. Stay tuned for more!

Remember how Honda took a friendly jab at Toyota before the new City was launched in Malaysia?
