Volkswagen to stop serving sausages at Wolfsburg HQ to reduce emissions

Just like everyone else, Volkswagen is also “showing” how green they’re trying to be. Aside from the myriad of electric cars they’ve introduced recently, Volkswagen has taken an extreme approach to reduce emissions and promote sustainability – by removing sausages (or Bratwurst as it is called) from the menu of its staff cafeteria.

This has not sat well, especially with the former German Chancellor and member of the Volkswagen supervisory board, Gerhard Schröder who has taken to LinkedIn to express his anger, over sausages.

He said it’s the “power bar for skilled production workers” and if it were up to him, nothing would be changed. He even ended his long and meaty post with the hashtag #savethewurst.

To understand what a big deal these sausages are to Volkswagen, here are some numbers.

The company has been producing their own sausages for nearly 50 years since 1973 and in 2019, they produced seven million sausages but made far fewer cars globally. According to Volkswagen, about 18,000 sausages are made every day.

It’s such a big part of Volkswagen’s organisation that it even has its own part number! No, we’re not joking – it’s No.199 398 500 A.

According to Volkswagen CEO, Herbert Diess, the company hopes to replace the carmaker’s factory-farmed meat with vegan alternatives by 2025.
