Video: Lexus LC 500 Convertible, 5 Things

Three years after the arrival of the LC 500 Coupe, which was subsequently featured in our annual AutoBuzz Best Cars of 2017 video, Lexus Malaysia has followed up with this, the LC 500 Convertible priced from RM1.35 million.

Powering the convertible art sculpture is the same 5.0-litre naturally-aspirated V8 engine and 10-speed automatic combo that’s in the LC 500 Coupe. The LC 500 Convertible makes the same 470 hp and 540 Nm however, it’s 0 to 100 km/h time is 4.9 seconds; half a second slower than the LC 500 Coupe’s 4.4 seconds.

That’s because the LC 500 Convertible is carrying nearly 100 kg of excess fat despite having a fabric roof over the carbon fibre roof in the LC 500 Coupe.

Exterior wise, while it may look as simple as an LC 500 Coupe without a roof, there are considerable changes in the rear quarter section. The section behind the doors now sport a “kick up” design as Lexus calls it, joining the slightly raised trunk surface. The integrated rear ducktail spoiler is also broader, lending the LC 500 Convertible a wider stance.

As with most convertibles, boot space is often times sacrificed to accommodate the collapsed roof but the LC500 convertible is an exception.

It offers just as much luggage room as the LC 500 Coupe at 172 litres. It’s a result of folding the fabric roof and tucking it between the rear suspension towers. Meanwhile, the hydraulic motors that operate the roof have been fitted in the empty space behind the rear seats.
