Check out the latest drop-top in Malaysia – the McLaren 720S Spider

After it’s global introduction at the tail end of 2018, the McLaren 720S Spider is now in Malaysia.

For starters, let’s talk numbers. It’s 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 serves up 720 hp and 770 Nm of torque exclusively to the rear wheels via a 7-speed dual clutch transmission.

And the ferocity in acceleration is exactly what you’d expect. 0 to 100 km/h is done in 2.9 seconds, 0 to 200 km/h in 7.9 seconds and top speed is rated at 341 km/h. With the roof lowered, it’s still good for a 325 km/h top speed! Imagine what that would feel like!

The most striking highlight of the car is obviously its retractable hard top – a completely new design made entirely of carbon fibre. Its folding mechanism is also the fastest in its class; capable of retracting the roof in just 11 seconds, at speeds of up to 50 km/h.

Being a convertible, naturally, you’d expect this to be a heavy lump but with a bespoke carbon fibre monocoque, coupled with the carbon fibre roof, the Spider is even lighter than a standard BMW 3-series at just over 1.3-tonnes.

If your mind’s ready to be blown, this thing is 88 kg lighter than the Ferrari 488 Spider, its closest competitor and weighs 48 kg less than the stripped-out 488 Pista Spider, without lacking any creature comforts you’d usually find in mid-size German sedan.

Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres can be specified at no additional cost to complement the new 10-spoke wheel designed exclusively for the Spider, accompanied by Pirelli P Zero tyres as standard.

Like the 720S Coupe, the Spider can be had in three different trims – standard, Luxury and Performance with a starting price of RM 1,218,000 before duties and options.
