Nissan GT-R Nismo gains more traction to conquer race tracks in the wet

In the heat of the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show, Nissan has quietly released the MY2020 Nissan GT-R Nismo, complete with race-car-inspired upgrades for improved cornering ability.

Nissan engineers have put the car through a diet by introducing carbon fibre parts for the front and rear bumpers, front fenders, hood, roof, side sill covers, trunk and rear spoiler, contributing a total weight savings of 10.5 kgs. On top of that, other upgrades and new components drops the weight by another 20 kgs.

Also new are the front fenders inspired from the GT3 GT-R race car that improves engine cooling and generate additional downforce onto the front tires without additional drag. The 2020 GT-R Nismo now sits on exclusive 20-inch nine-spoke RAYS aluminium wheels that are lighter than before, wrapped in newly design Dunlop tyres that offers 11% more contact patch.

All the new components come together to give the new car higher cornering force, enhanced steering response and improved rolling resistance when compared to the previous model.

Under the hood is a VR38DETT 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine now generating 600 hp and 652 Nm of torque mated to a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission to channel power to all four-wheels. Nissan says the transmission features a more refined “R mode” with optimised gear selection and faster shifts.

Tasked to stop the beast in its track are a set of Brembo carbon ceramic rotors measuring 410 mm up front and 390 mm at the rear clammed by Brembo calipers. The newly developed calipers, identifiable through its bright yellow paint, can withstand temperatures of more than 1,000 degrees Celsius.

Chief product specialist for the Nissan GT-R, Hiroshi Tamura said: “We have built the 2020 GT-R NISMO for our customers to be the ultimate track and street vehicle. It is about total balance management, not just chasing power figures. The new NISMO has been brought to a new level, with enhanced engine, handling, braking and aerodynamics.”
