The new Mercedes-AMG E53 4MATIC+ with EQ Boost replaces the E43 AMG

Having announced that there’ll be 6 new launches in the next three months along with their impressive Q3 figures, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia took the opportunity to flex another fibre of its muscle by previewing the new Mercedes-AMG E53 4MATIC+.

As the pictures show, it’ll be available in both coupe and sedan layouts, as it replaces the E43 AMG but still plays second fiddle to the mighty E63.

The highlight of the E53 AMG though is the introduction of the EQ Boost mild hybrid powertrain – similar to the one applied in the CLS 53 launched in Malaysia recently.

Instead of the old V6 in the E43 AMG, it’s still a 3.0-litre twin-turbo but is now a straight-six with an electric compressor to produce 435 hp and 520 Nm. Transmission of choice is none other than the 9-speed AMG Speedshift automatic transmission channeling power to all four wheels.

With turbo lag eliminated along with an increase in horsepower from the electric compressor, 0 to 100 km/h is done in 4.4 seconds in the coupe while the sedan is 0.1 second slower.

It’s not easy for the untrained eye to tell the E53 from the E43 AMG but notable changes can be seen in the rear diffuser and a new 20-inch wheel design that looks more aftermarket wheels cherry-picked to fit the car’s arches like a glove.

Inside, at a glance, the E53 AMG accommodates a new flat-bottomed steering wheel and AMG sports seats in Nappa leather with red seat belts specifically for the Coupe. Both the interiors are distinguished with different dashboard trims – carbon fibre on the sedan and aluminium on the Coupe – we would’ve preferred it the other way round to be honest.
