There’s a new Subaru WRX STI Type RA-R in Japan we won’t be getting

Subaru Corporation and Subaru Tecnica International (STI) has introduced the WRX STI TYPE RA-R, a special limited-edition model with just 500 units available for the Japanese market alone, at approx. RM 182k.

The TYPE RA-R, based on the WRX STI, was built to commemorate STI’s 30th anniversary since its establishment in 1988. Developed under the concepts of lightweight, speed and enjoyment”, the TYPE RA-R was built to pursue the “Running, Turning and Stopping” fundamentals of a performance car.

With the application of lightweight parts, the TYPE RA-R saves 30kg of weight compared to the previous complete models “S208” and “S207”, and is also 10kg lighter than the base model WRX STI.

Combined with lighter body is EJ20 Boxer engine from the S208, strapped with a twin-scroll turbocharger to produce 329 hp and 432 Nm of torque, delivering the highest output among all the STI complete models.

With the power-to-weight ratio exceeding that of the S208, the Type RA-R brings “speed” and ”enjoyment” at the highest level seen on any STI model.

An STI performance exhaust system with lowered back pressure also contributes to higher engine output and more direct acceleration response. The dampers and coil springs on the Type RA-R were exclusively-designed for the car, that’s sitting on Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres.

Brembo brakes with high performance brake pads sit behind a set of lovely 18-inch BBS wheels. These enhancements give extra margins for the TYPE RA-R and better controllability for the driver’s peace of mind.
