We need this Pothole Detection Technology on the Ford Focus

No one likes potholes. They make the journey uncomfortable, messes up the wheel alignment and sometimes even damages the suspension if its severe enough. Ford knows this very well and has come up with a solution to make going over potholes a little more bearable in the all-new Ford Focus.

Coined as the Pothole Detection Technology, the system detects when a wheel is falling into a pothole and adjusts the suspension to limit the wheel drop. By doing so, the wheel does not fall too far into the pothole and therefore not strike the road as harshly on exit. The rear suspension will react even quicker after being pre-empted by the front wheels.

This innovative pothole detection technology is a feature available with the optional Continuously Controlled Damping technology on new Focus that adjusts the suspension damping every two milliseconds according to the body, steering and braking inputs for the smoothest ride quality.

Ford Focus vehicle dynamics supervisor, Guy Mathot said: “Our engineers are always searching for the roughest roads to really test our suspension to the limit, but more and more we’re noticing that the rough roads are finding us. Potholes are a problem that isn’t going away anytime soon, but with our advanced suspension technology for all-new Focus, we’ve been able to reduce their impact.”
