Volvo XC40 compact crossover previewed, coming in 2018

Right after the SUV fad, the market for compact crossovers are mushrooming. Buyers abandon the usual saloons or hatchbacks to go for something that gives them security and confidence while on the road. Volvo seems to understand this trend, and will soon entice buyers with the all-new Volvo XC40 compact crossover.

Previewed exclusively on AutoCar UK, the XC40 remains a prototype (called the Concept 40.1) which was previewed together with the V40 concept earlier in May. The XC40 will be part of the standard Volvo three-pronged 40-series assault, with the V40 hatchback and estate being in the pipeline. Developed under its new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform, the XC40 should be ready to hit showroom floors in 2018.volvo-xc40-preview-8

What’s new here is the powertrain. The XC40 will debut with Volvo’s new modular 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine, which is either petrol or diesel powered. The engines can be had with or without turbocharging, and has an electric motor to assist the engine. In a way, it follows the similar playbook of its larger XC90 sibling.

The XC40’s range topper will carry the T5 Twin Engine, a 180 hp petrol lump combined with a 74 hp electric motor. Power will be delivered to the front wheels with the help of a seven-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox. The electric motor will also drive the gearbox shaft and the even-numbered gears. Relying on its battery alone will give a range of less than 50km. No data on its fuel economy or performance have been released, but the folks in Gothenburg are confident that it will be a class-leading compact SUV against established rivals.volvo-xc40-preview-7

Now, closer to reality, the new XC40 plug-in hybrid should arrive on our shores sometime in 2018. Let’s not forget, Volvo has an assembling facility here in Shah Alam, and they have gone on the aggressive by introducing EEV-incentivised cars. When the XC40 reaches here, it could well be priced within the RM200k range. How’s that for a bargain?
