All-new Peugeot 3008 now a proper SUV, to rival the Honda CR-V [+ Video]

The first-generation Peugeot 3008 was introduced as a mid-size crossover that was launched back in 2008. It had not the proportions of a crossover, and instead looked more like a compact MPV. Now, Peugeot said the next-generation 3008 will be developed as a full-SUV, one that will go against the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, and the Renault Koleos.

The new 3008 will be based on Peugeot’s EMP2 modular platform which is 100kg lighter compared to the older car. Peugeot abandoned its crossover roots and redesigned it to look more like a conventional SUV. Dimensions wise, the new 3008 is bigger than its predecessor at 4.5m long, 1.8m wide and 1.6m tall. Thanks to its larger dimensions, boot space is cavernous, at 520 litres.2016-pug-3008 (4)

At the front, the 3008 sports the same fascia as the 308, with the familiar wide grille, LED headlights and sculpted bonnet. These all give the SUV a more “macho” look compared to its tamer predecessor. It rides on a set of 18-inch wheels and has a floating roofline complemented by rails.

It gets better on the inside, as Peugeot implements the new i-Cockpit into the 3008. Essentially, it’s their version of Audi’s Virtual Cockpit, where a 12.3-inch digital display takes over the conventional analogue gauges. It displays speedo and tachometer as standard, and will also project multimedia information and navigation instructions. An 8-inch infotainment screen is built into the middle to complement the i-Cockpit. Also standard here is Peugeot’s small steering wheel.2016-pug-3008 (6)

Engine choices for the 3008 include a 128 hp 1.2-litre PureTech petrol engine and the 163 hp 1.6-litre turbo engine, the latter only available with a six-speed automatic. That is also the variant that will most likely land in Malaysia should it arrive here. Options for oil burning variants include a 1.6-litre and a 2.0-litre BlueHDi engines.

Three variants will be offered – Access, Active, Allure, and pricing begins (at the UK) at around £21,000 (approx RM126,000 based on today’s rates). European delivery is scheduled for the end of 2016, which means the new 3008 should arrive on our shores sometime in 2017. Presently, the Peugeot 3008 1.6L is sold in Malaysia for RM158,888.00.
