Picture of facelifted Mazda3 leaks online, looks like a shrunken Mazda6

The third-generation Mazda3 was first introduced back in 2013, and continues to be one of the best passenger cars in the market. That is, though, until the tenth-generation Honda Civic arrives. Three years into its life, it’s rather timely that we see a midlife refresh.

Judging from the leaked image here, the obvious difference would be the new front grille, which resembles that of the Mazda6, CX-3 and CX-9 SUVs. Also seen here are the redesigned lower air intake, fog lights, and side indicators on the wing mirrors.

The Mazda6 facelift shares similar front grille design as the upcoming Mazda3 facelift

While the changes are mainly cosmetic, no mechanical updates are expected here. As such, expect the Mazda3 to be powered by the same SkyActiv powertrains. In Malaysia, it is offered in the sole 162 hp 2.0-litre SkyActiv engine with six-speed automatic gearbox, but the 2.5-litre petrol and 2.2-litre twin-turbo diesel engine have yet to be introduced by Bermaz.

The new facelifted 3 should be bound for Malaysia sometime next year. Presently, Mazda Malaysia is offering the sedan and hatchback variants of the Mazda3, both powered by the same 2.0-litre lump. Find out what we think of them in our review!
