Here’s what’s new with the limited-production GT86 TRD Special Edition

Toyota has unveiled the latest GT86 for the “US of A” market with a sharper, more optimised and balanced limited-production 86 TRD Special Edition.

New equipment includes SACHS dampers, four-pot Brembo calipers in the front, twin-pot Brembo calipers at the back and it’s finished exclusively in Raven black, classic TRD tricolor graphics and a TRD body kit.The TRD body kit consists of a redesigned front bumper, side sills, rear bumper, diffuser and spoiler. Complementing the new look is a set of 18-inch alloys wrapped in 215/40 R18 Michelin  Pilot Sport 4 tyres.

Not sure if those four-pot brakes are necessary though – the 2.0-litre four-cylinder boxer engine only makes 205 hp with 212 Nm of torque. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic. The boxer engine exhales through a TRD exhaust with brushed stainless steel tips. The 6-speed manual gearbox is paired with a short-throw shifter while the 6-speed automatic gearbox is equipped with a Dynamic Rev Management System that “blips” the throttle on downshifts. A Torsen limited-slip differential is fitted as standard.

For track driving, the TRD Special Edition’s Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) can be set in Track mode or shut off completely.Inside is a new red and black-trimmed, smaller diameter steering wheel with red contrast stitching,“TRD” logo embroidered on the passenger side instrument panel and a Granlux suede-like upholstery above the instrument cluster with an “86” logo.

For the performance purists, the TRD Special Editions gets a 4.2-inch TFT Multi-Information Display that projects a G-Force meter, stopwatch, horsepower and torque curves, engine coolant and oil temperatures. An “86” logo also appears on the MID upon start-up.Production of the 86 TRD Special Edition will be limited to only 1,418 units and is priced at approx. RM 131k.
