Toyota Mirai FCV to celebrate Earth Day’s 45th anniversary in Washington D.C. [+Video]

Guests of Earth Day’s 45th anniversary will be among the first few in the world to get an up close and personal look at the future direction of automobiles, one that’s been conceptualised into the form of a four-door midsize sedan by Toyota. This hydrogen and oxygen powered fuel cell vehicle (FCV) is known as the Mirai which literally means future in Japanese.

Toyota is partnering with Earth Day Network to sponsor the Global Citizen 2015 Earth Day celebrating that will take place from 17 to 19 April. The event, staged to take place at the National Hall in Washington D.C., will feature leading environmental voices, government leaders, celebrity performances and of course, a Mirai activation – whatever that means.

The Mirai is the result of more than 20 years of research, and Toyota believes that Earth Day 2015 will be a great platform to educate the public about their fuel cell technology and hydrogen as the potential fuel for propulsion in the future. Read more on the Mirai and how it works here.

This tide-turning Toyota is said to manage a travelling distance of 650km on a full tank of hydrogen, and refueling will take about five minutes. Frankly speaking, that’s not too quick or impressive a time, but the technology will most certainly improve over time. The Mirai will go on sale in California later this year.
