An Alfa Romeo Tonale successor is coming, and it won’t be petrol-only

Alfa Romeo has just dropped a teaser image for what it calls its “new C-SUV”. Widely believed to be the successor to the existing Tonale SUV, the image only shows a close-up of the car’s rear quarter.

From the teaser image, we can see that the new C-SUV takes some styling cues from the current Tonale. It features a sporty sloping roofline that flows into a slim LED taillight assembly.

Housed within it is a redesigned U-shaped LED signature. However, the image is cropped just as the single LED module ends, so it’s unclear whether the taillight will feature additional LED elements like those on the current Tonale.

And looking to the bottom left of the image, lies a fuel door cutout, suggesting that it’ll be available in internal combustion engine (ICE) form. Alfa Romeo says that the new C-SUV will be based on the STLA Medium platform, introducing multiple powertrain options.

Looking at the Junior, which uses the STLA Small platform, gives us a better idea on what to expect. It comes in two powertrain options: a mild hybrid featuring a 1.2-litre Atkinson-cycle three-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor producing 136 hp, and an electric (EV) version with up to 240 hp and 410 km of range.

The company added that the new model will be built in its Melfi plant in Italy and is scheduled to be officially unveiled in the fourth quarter of 2027.

In Malaysia, Alfa Romeo has re-entered the market with the Giulia and Stelvio, priced from RM440,077 and RM480,128 respectively, on the road without insurance. As for the Tonale, we’ll have to wait a little longer.

During a media event last year, the Italian carmaker said the Tonale would join the existing lineup, alongside the more compact Junior, “in the near future”. However, no launch date has been confirmed yet.
