The BMW M2 just beat its more powerful sibling at the Nürburgring thanks to its new aero track kit

The BMW M2 has returned to the Green Hell, but instead of yet another hotter variant, it’s the standard car taking on the compact car lap record set by its M2 CS sibling last year. This time, it’s equipped with a big new weapon — the M Performance Track Kit.

The result? The BMW M2 equipped with the M Performance Track Kit lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7:25.068 minutes, shaving 0.5 seconds off the more powerful and more aggressive M2 CS, while finishing over 13 seconds quicker than the standard car without the aero package.

The M Performance Track Kit introduces a manually adjustable front splitter, paired with a massive swan-neck rear wing. The latter features what BMW calls “Race Mode”, which moves the wing 50 mm rearward to significantly increase downforce. Together, the upgrades allow the M2 to carry more speed through corners while improving stability.

Speaking of stability, the package also brings a series of suspension enhancements to make the M2 even more capable on track. These include new threaded coilovers with four-way adjustable rebound and compression damping, adjustable support bearings, and a motorsport-inspired damper system. Ride height can also be lowered by up to 20 mm at both the front and rear.

BMW is also offering an optional M Performance exhaust system, although it hasn’t confirmed whether it was fitted to the record-setting car. Borrowed from the M2 CS, the titanium exhaust reduces weight by around eight kg while increasing engine output.

Power still comes from BMW’s familiar 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged S58 inline-six, producing 480 hp and 600 Nm of torque in standard form. When paired with the M Performance exhaust system, however, output climbs to 530 hp.

The M Performance Track Kit is priced at EUR23,500 (approximately RM110,000), excluding installation, on top of the cost of a standard BMW M2. Buyers who also want the M Performance exhaust system can purchase it separately for EUR8,343.50 (approximately RM39,000), also before installation costs.

If a few aerodynamic tweaks were enough to help the standard M2 beat its CS sibling, imagine what the M2 CS could do with the same M Performance Track Kit. It might even start knocking on the door of the BMW M4 CSL official lap record of 7:18.137 minutes.
