The GTI badge has always been something sacred among Volkswagen enthusiasts, in part because VW themselves keep it exclusive and not casually thrown onto any car with a sportier trim… (looking at you, BMW). Now, the iconic badge is entering a completely new chapter with the introduction of the new Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI — the first fully electric model to wear the GTI badge, and like all of the previous GTIs, it’s got proper spicier upgrades to back up its looks.
Starting with what matters most, the all-new Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI features a single front-mounted electric motor producing 226 hp and 290 Nm of torque — 18 hp more than the standard ID. Polo. That’s enough for a 0-100 km/h sprint in just 6.8 seconds, before topping out at 175 km/h.
But power isn’t the only upgrade here. To ensure it handles like a proper GTI, Volkswagen has fitted the car with a front locking differential (or e-LSD) as standard, alongside adaptive DCC sports suspension and a specially developed progressive steering system.
Power comes from a 52 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery pack, delivering up to 424 km of range under the WLTP test cycle. The system also supports DC fast charging at up to 102 kW, allowing the battery to be charged from 10-80% in just 24 minutes.
The Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI measures 4,096 mm long, 1,816 mm wide, 1,513 mm tall, and has a wheelbase of 2,599 mm. It’s mostly similar to the standard ID. Polo but sits 17mm lower thanks to its new sports suspension.

Visually, the Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI receives a host of upgrades to distinguish it from the standard model. Staying true to GTI tradition, it features the signature red accent line stretching across the front fascia and bellow the IQ.Light LED matrix headlights, with the GTI badge proudly displayed up front.
The front bumper has also been redesigned with a larger lower intake and vertical red accents, which likely help channel more air to cool its uprated components under harder driving conditions. Meanwhile, the outer edges of the bumper now feature vertical LED elements in place of the standard model’s air curtain design, giving the car a more aggressive appearance.
Further reinforcing its sporty character are the large dual-tone 19-inch alloy wheels with GTI centre caps, paired with red brake callipers. Along the sides, the ID. Polo GTI also gets more aggressive side skirts, complete with subtle GTI branding.
At the rear, the changes are a little more understated, though the car does receive a redesigned bumper with a deeper, more pronounced diffuser-inspired design to complete the sportier look.

Inside, the GTI treatment continues with a cabin dominated by a red-and-black colour scheme. The steering wheel proudly wears a red GTI badge and matching red centre marker, while red stitching can be found throughout the interior, especially on the tartan sports seats — a signature GTI touch that fans will instantly recognise.
Mounted on the dashboard is a 12.9-inch infotainment display paired with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. The latter features multiple display modes, including one inspired by the first-generation Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk1. And speaking of screens, or perhaps the de-dramatisation of them, Volkswagen has also brought back physical steering wheel buttons alongside a row of physical shortcut controls below the centre display.
There is also a dedicated GTI drive mode that can be activated via a button on the sports steering wheel. Once engaged, it sharpens the suspension, throttle response, and steering, while also transforming the instrument cluster with sportier graphics and colours.
Other comfort-focused features include a 425-watt 10-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, ambient interior lighting, and a large panoramic sunroof. Despite its sporty intentions, the car remains plenty practical too, offering 441 litres of boot space that expands to 1,240 litres with the rear seats folded — enough for some spirited driving with the family, if the wife allows.
Presales for the Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI in Germany have already begun with a sticker price of EUR39,000 (approx. RM179k). This marks quite a big premium over the standard model, which starts from EUR 24,995 (approx. RM115k). Still, in a market increasingly filled with EVs focused purely on efficiency and technology, it’s refreshing to see Volkswagen trying to inject a little character and excitement back into the driving experience — especially with a badge as iconic as GTI.
