Mercedes-AMG has posted a short video on their Instagram page featuring a heavily camouflaged prototype drifting around a course. Based on the accompanying caption, this appears to be the upcoming fully-electric AMG model that will be based on the AMG.EA (AMG Electric Architecture) platform.
While at first glance, it may look just like a typical EV teaser – complete with tyres squealing – the real kicker is the distinctive V8 rumble it emits just before the end of the video!
Not much else has been revealed, other than Mercedes-AMG stating that their high-performance electric architecture is coming, though without a specific timeline.
According to Mercedes-AMG, two models will be developed on the new AMG.EA platform: a four-door coupe and an SUV model, with the former – the car we’re likely looking at here – being the first to launch on the new platform.
Previously in 2024, the company conducted winter testing of the prototype in northern Sweden, near the Arctic Circle, with temperatures as low as -25 degrees Celsius, as part of a comprehensive testing phase spanning multiple proving grounds in various countries and climates.
We now know that the AMG.EA will feature synthesised engine noise, as evident in the brief demonstration in the video. This setup is similar to the one found in the Hyundai Ioniq 5N, although the latter is only available within the cabin – we’re not sure if AMG’s teaser means we’ll also hear it outside the car.
The gearshift noises could also mean that the AMG.EA coupe might offer artificial gear shifts, a feature also found on the Hyundai.
According to Mercedes-AMG, the AMG.EA is based on axial-flux motor technology. In simpler terms, this is a more compact electric motor that delivers a powerful output for its size, density, and weight. This new electric motor will work in tandem with a new high-performance high-voltage battery pack.
When the AMG.EA makes its eventual debut, it will join the ranks of the Mercedes-AMG EQE and the discontinued Mercedes-AMG EQS as the third pure electric AMG model. That said, it holds the distinction of being the first dedicated electric vehicle under the Mercedes-AMG marque.
We will have to wait until Mercedes-AMG reveals the full specifications for the first model based on the AMG.EA platform in all its glory, to know what’s underneath the camouflage and its true capabilities, which we hope won’t take too long!
