This Vision V concept is Mercedes-Benz’s answer to Chinese luxury MPVs

Mercedes-Benz has revealed more info about its new modular Van Electric Architecture (VAN.EA) platform, set to debut in 2026. The new platform will offer various types of Mercedes-Benz vans ranging from practical family vehicles to exclusive VIP shuttles to luxury limousines. The new approach is shown through the Vision V show car with a focus on the concept of “Private Lounge” at the Auto Shanghai 2025.

The exterior features welcome screens on the chrome-plated B-pillars along with an integrated chrome radiator grille that lights up using nearly 400 lighting features.

When the passengers approach the Vision V, the grille projects a dynamic and artistic light show. The lighting under the headlights also functions as indicators. The 24-inch wheels also feature illumination. The large rear window is also framed by over 450 three-dimensional illumination which serve as taillights and brake lights.

Inside, the Vision V takes the idea of a luxury MPV to another level. The glass between driver and passenger can be changed from transparent to opaque, either completely or in sections. Similarly, this can be done to the window in milliseconds.

The glass can change from transparent to various levels of desired opacity for more privacy or sun protection or even to create dynamic surfaces for digital content.

Furnishing is done with a combination of Nappa leather and open-pore burr wood. The elaborate cabin is also home to a 42 speaker surround sound system with Dolby Atmos. There are also additional speakers mounted in the glass enclosures on both sides of the cabin.

The “Private Lounge” experience is further elevated with a retractable 65-inch screen with split-screen functions, located under the floor. As soon as passengers are inside and the doors are closed, the 4K resolution screen automatically glides upwards.

Seven projectors in the headliner and floor expand the field of vision as the side windows become additional “screens” and create a digital 360-degree experience. The Vision V offers seven different ‘experiences’, with different lighting and mood settings, including Entertainment, Relax, Gaming, Work, Shopping, Discovery, and Karaoke.

At the front, the cockpit is dominated by the Superscreen with three screens extending from pillar to pillar, to provide all the vehicle’s essential information.

Mercedes-Benz Group, Chief Design Office, Gordon Wagener said, “The Mercedes‑Benz Vans have been iconic for decades. With the Vision V we take that heritage and transform it into a completely new context of highest luxury transportation. This show car embodies the perfect harmony between luxury and van design, setting a new benchmark for the future.”

Is it too little too late for Mercedes-Benz given the rise of Chinese high-tech luxury MPVs, or can they show that they’ve not forgotten how to be luxurious?
