Nowadays, it’s not uncommon to find oil and gas companies boasting how their special Ron95 mix can help you get insert-amount-of-mileage-here per tank. So when we heard Shell Malaysia saying that their new-and-improved FuelSave 95 can make you go 15 km further in a single tank, you knew we had to test that out!
How so? Why, with a road trip from the southernmost Shell station to the most northernmost one, all while doing it in a single tank of gas – in a single day!
So what’s so special about Shell’s special sauce in their new Shell FuelSave 95? Well, when our car engines burn fuel via combustion, we leave behind deposits that build up within the engine and fuel systems over time. Shell’s formulation of Shell FuelSave 95 targets those deposits to prevent carbon build-up in the engine, ensuring a more efficient operation and better overall fuel consumption.
To put the new Shell FuelSave 95 to the test, we used a pair of hybrid crossovers driven by our presenters: the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid, and the Honda HR-V RS e:HEV.
Both cars are hybrid crossovers, and both run on petrol and electric battery power. However, how these hybrid systems work is fundamentally different from each other.
The Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid operates traditionally with the petrol engine and electric motor working together to keep the battery charged, while the Honda HR-V RS e:HEV’s petrol engine acts mostly as a generator for the electric motor and batteries; a direct mechanical linkage is only established during high-speed cruising.
The Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is powered by a 1.8-litre engine alongside an electric motor for a combined output of 122 hp, while the HR-V RS e:HEV has a max output of 131 hp and 253 Nm, all generated by the Traction electric motor.
Since the filming of this video, UMW Toyota Motor has introduced a new facelift update on the 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid. It’s now available in two variants, one regular and another with GR-Sport appointments, with pricing starting from RM140,800 for the HEV-badged models. The Honda HR-V RS e:HEV continues to be priced at RM141,900, although we think that a facelift update might be coming soon.
A special thank you to Shell Malaysia for their support to make this ambitious drive from south to north possible!
